  • A Matter of Execution

    A near-future, sci-fi thriller.

Sidney Carter might be New London’s top chief inspector—but he hardly seems destined to save the world. Haunted by his wife’s murder, Carter depends on street drugs to ease his torment. Isolated, bitter, and addicted, he is a shell of the proud man he once was.

Then Carter meets Luci Alavanca. Her beauty, talent, and youthful wit rekindle the feelings Carter lost when he buried his wife. A desire to live. And a desire to love.

While Carter’s obsession with Luci deepens, his superintendent, Elsa LeFarge, pulls him into New London’s secret coalition, the Lion’s Pride. Membership in the Pride grants Carter power and wealth, which he uses to charm Luci. But the higher he climbs in the Lion’s Pride, the more he realizes how dangerous and despicable the secret coalition is.

Horrified, Carter knows he must bring down the Lion’s Pride—to save himself, to save Luci, and to save countless other innocent lives.

  • From Chapter 1 of A Matter of Execution

Carter inhaled a deep breath through his nose and exhaled through his mouth. Already bored, his mouth dry, he drained most of his drink. Then he turned his attention back to the party and immediately forgot about LeFarge.

Instead, a young woman snared Carter’s attention. Heat rushed to his cheeks as he stared. Something stirred in his chest. Something long forgotten.

The woman was stunning. Beyond stunning. She was even more beautiful than his Elizabeth.

That thought, that betrayal, sent a tremor through his hand, rattling the ice in his glass. Dismayed, Carter snapped his focus off the woman and dropped his gaze towards the bottom of his tumbler. He mindlessly swished the remnants of ice cubes in circles before slamming the last bits of his drink down his throat. Glass empty, he clutched it to his chest and closed his eyes. Pinched the bridge of his nose with his free hand, hoping to ease the pressure building behind his forehead.

I’m doing nothing wrong, he thought. Nothing. Elizabeth would want this for me.

Teeth clenched, Carter opened his eyes and ventured another glance in the young woman’s direction. She stood at the room’s epicenter, close to a white-haired man Carter recognized from his invitation. The party’s guest of honor, Professor Alexandre Alavanca, who had recently joined the Imperial College’s esteemed faculty. Carter shook his head and looked away again. He and this woman were from two different worlds.

  • Chapter 1: Sibling Rivalry

6th Day of the Elder Moon, 226 Post Gaimead

The day I first met Edward, before I actually met him.

Prince Eddadi al Jafar al Tariq Adlani pushed his book aside and wiped his brow. Even reading in such weather was a chore. Looking for a distraction, he gazed into the sunlit courtyard, wondering what his brothers and sister were doing. But before he focused on his siblings, something else caught his eye. Something threatening. An unexpected movement.

A shadow swept through the courtyard like a scythe cutting grain. Back, forth. Over the garden where his sister played. Back and forth. Across the tiled patio where his brothers practiced. Back, forth. Back and forth.

Eddadi clamped his eyes shut, doubting the danger he had seen. It had to be an illusion caused by the summer morning’s blistering heat. A trick of the eye. Right?

Except there wasn’t a cloud in the sky. The only shade came from the small roof above him that rimmed the Royal Palace’s inner courtyard. The garden and patio, though, were unguarded from the blazing sun.

    Such a shadow shouldn’t exist.

Worried, Eddadi scrunched his eyes past closed then rubbed them for good measure.

Just a mirage, he thought. Just a mirage.

But when he cracked open his eyes and refocused, nothing had changed. The ominous shadow still slid silently over the courtyard as if stalking prey. Could it be? Really be a foreboding?

A foreboding. An evil spirit that brought pain and suffering to those it visited—those it attacked. A spirit that could only be seen on the brightest of bright sunny days.

Eddadi’s chest tightened, trying to restrain his agitated heart. From what he had read of forebodings, he should be safe at his shaded veranda table. But his brothers continued their sparring with wooden swords, lost in concentration and oblivious to the world around them. And where had their little sister gone?

He opened his mouth to summon a shout of warning. His voice, though, refused to work. Dread squeezed his neck, and his words stayed locked in his throat.

Then the shadow stopped its sweep of the courtyard. Only the edges of its crescent form flickered back and forth as it hovered over Kamil and Zaydan. The foreboding had chosen its target and looked ready to fall upon its victim.

At last, spurred by worry, Eddadi’s voice broke free.

“Brothers!” he shouted. “A foreboding! You must move! Get out of its shadow, out of the courtyard, or you’ll be doomed to a horrible fate!”

    More to come!
